The United Nations political chief today called for the establishment of a mechanism to address the myriad challenges facing countries in West Africa’s Sahel region, which, he said, include a humanitarian crisis, lack of socio-economic development, insecurity and the threat of terrorism.

The outgoing United Nations envoy in Liberia today stressed the need for reconciliation in the country, adding that this is an essential step to consolidate stability and to ensure that the progress achieved by the democratic elections held last year can continue.

Dakar, 25 January 2012 - The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, Said Djinnit met with the President of the Republic of Senegal to extend his wishes on the occasion of the New Year. The Special representative took the opportunity to discuss the organization of the presidential elections scheduled on February 26 2012. He welcomed the progress of the electoral process and Senegal’s attachment to democratic values and respect for the rule of Law.

Lome, 24 January 2012 - As part of his regular consultations with leaders of West African countries, the Special Representative of Secretary-General for West Africa, Said Djinnit, concluded a two-day visit in Togo, a country that currently chairs the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA).
