Facilitators call for calm and the resumption of the political dialogue in Guinea

8 May 2013 - Together with the two national facilitators, Said Djinnit issued a statement yesterday expressing concerns about the raise of violent incidents during demonstrations related to the electoral process in Guinea. The statement welcomes the decision of the opposition leaders to postpone the demonstration which was scheduled to take place in Conakry today. The facilitators call on to all the Guineans to contribute to the restoration of a peaceful atmosphere in the country in accordance with the "anti-violence declaration" signed by the Government and the political parties on 24 April. Said Djinnit urges the political parties to resume an inclusive dialogue without delay. He is pursuing further consultations with the parties today.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Said Djinnit, is in the Conakry (Guinea) since Tuesday, in his capacity as International Facilitator, pursuing consultations with the Guinean parties in an attempt to restore the political dialogue. In view of the escalation of violence noted over the past weeks on the occasion of the public demonstrations, the international facilitator had appealed to the Opposition to postpone its demonstration scheduled for today.
