Support to Somali Security Forces

UNSOS is mandated to provide non-lethal logistical support to up to 20,900 Somali Security Forces personnel from the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Somali National Police Force (SNPF) engaged in joint and coordinated operations with AUSSOM.

In full compliance with the United Nations Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (HRDDP), UNSOS support to the Somali Security Forces is strictly limited to food, water, fuel, tentage, transportation, in-theatre medical evacuation, defence stores, communications equipment, and training. This support is funded through voluntary contributions to the Somali Security Forces Trust Fund, administered by UNSOS.

The Security Council first authorised non-lethal logistical support to SNA forces in November 2013 for joint operations with African Union forces combating Al-Shabaab. The scope of support was subsequently adjusted in 2018 following the adoption of the Somalia Transition Plan for the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to Somali national forces.

The current support package covers up to 20,900 SNA and SNPF personnel who are formally integrated into the National Security Architecture and actively participate in joint or coordinated operations with AUSSOM, in line with Security Council resolution 2520 (2020).
