29 November 2010 -- "The Secretary-General welcomes the holding of the second round of the presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire, despite some violent incidents in various areas of the country. He notes that, by exercising their right to vote for the second time in one month, the Ivorian people demonstrated again their desire for lasting peace and stability in their country," according to a statement issued by his Spokesperson.

The Secretary-General calls on the Ivorian parties and candidates to refrain from announcing the results in advance of the Independent Electoral Commission. He urges candidates and parties to abide by the law in the resolution of any disputes related to the electoral process. He calls on them to play their part in maintaining a calm environment and to accept the proclaimed and certified results in a spirit of peace and reconciliation.

The Secretary-General stresses that any disruption in the electoral process would not be in the interest of the people of Côte d'Ivoire, who have waited many years to reach a successful conclusion to the crisis, of which these elections are a critical step.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General will continue, in the context of his certification mandate, all his efforts to safeguard the electoral process so that the will of the Ivorian people will be respected. The United Nations will provide its full support to the completion of the electoral operations and to the Ivorian peace process as a whole.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte parole du Secrétaire général
à l'occasion de l'élection présidentielle en Côte d'Ivoire

Le Secrétaire général se félicite de la tenue, hier, du deuxième tour de l'élection présidentielle en Côte d'Ivoire en dépit de quelques incidents violents dans diverses parties du pays. Il note qu'en exerçant leur droit de vote pour la seconde fois en un mois, les Ivoiriens ont démontré leur désir de paix durable et de stabilité pour le pays,.

Le Secrétaire général appelle toutes les parties ivoiriennes et les candidats à s'abstenir d'annoncer des résultats avant la Commission électorale indépendante. Il enjoint les candidats et les parties à respecter la loi en matière de règlement des différends électoraux. Il les appelle à assumer leur rôle pour maintenir un environnement serein et à accepter les résultats proclamés et certifiés dans un esprit de paix et de réconciliation.

Le Secrétaire général souligne que toute entrave au processus électoral ne serait pas dans l'intérêt du peuple de la Côte d'Ivoire qui attend depuis plusieurs années un règlement de la crise dont ces élections sont une étape importante.

Le Représentant spécial du Secrétaire général poursuivra ses efforts pour préserver le processus électoral, en conformité avec son mandat de certification, afin que la volonté du peuple ivoirien soit respectée. Les Nations Unies fourniront leur plein soutien à la conclusion des opérations électorales et au processus de paix ivoirien dans son ensemble.
