Statement on the election in Guinea

8 November 2010 -- Said Djinnit, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General of West Africa welcomes the peaceful holding of the second round of the historical Presidential Election in Guinea on Sunday.

Through their massive mobilization the people of Guinea have demonstrated their deep commitment to democracy and their willingness to restore constitutional order.

Said Djinnit calls on their sense of civic responsibility to remain calm before and after the results are officially released.

He also encourages the two candidates to remain committed to the Protocol that they signed in Ouagadougou on 3 September 2010 and their joint statement of 5 November 2010 in Conakry.
