Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on bombings in Nigeria

New York, 25 December 2011 - The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the attacks targeting churches in Madala, on the outskirt of the Nigerian capital, Abuja and the north-eastern city of Jos, which have left many dead and injured.
The Secretary-General expresses his sympathy and condolences to the people of Nigeria and to the bereaved families who have lost loved ones.
The Secretary-General calls once again for an end to all acts of sectarian violence in the country and reiterates his firm conviction that no objective sought can justify this resort to violence.
