Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

The Special Envoy for the Sahel takes function in Dakar

Dakar, 13 May 2014 – The new Special Envoy for the Sahel and Head of Office, Mrs. Hiroute Guebre Sellassie took function yesterday, in Dakar. Appointed on 1st May 2014, she succeeds Romano Prodi of Italy, who completed his assignment on 31 January 2014.
