Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

New York, 10 July 2013- Said Djinnit, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for West Africa, today briefed the Security Council on the activities of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) over the past six months. He also presented an overview of the most recent developments related to peace and security in the sub-region.
