Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

Dakar, 06 July 2015 – The Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, is encouraged by the initial measures taken by stakeholders in Guinea and calls on them to redouble their efforts to reach an agreement that will enable the organization of peaceful, credible, inclusive and transparent elections.
