Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

Mohamed Ibn Chambas expresses his condolences to the people and Government of Ghana.

Dakar, 4 June 2015- The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, expresses his deep condolences to the bereaved families, the people and the government of Ghana following the explosion of a gas station that occurred in Accra on 3 June 2015 and caused dozens of deaths and many more injured, as well as extensive material damage.
