Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

Dakar, 18 December 2014- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa (UNOWA) and High-Level Representative of the Secretary-General to Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas strongly condemns the renewed waves of attacks in Borno State, North Eastern Nigeria and the continuous violence against innocent civilians, notably reported large abductions of women and children.
