Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

The Praia Declaration on Elections and Stability in West Africa

The Praia Declaration on Elections and Stabilityin West Africa is the outcome document of theRegional Conference held in May 2011 in Cape Verde. The conference aimed at analyzing the impact of electoral processes on stability and democracy in the sub-region as well as their implications in terms of crisis prevention and peacebuilding. The participants exchanged on best practices and lessons learned from recent elections in West Africa. The Declaration of Praia on Elections and Stability in West Africa identifies practical recommendations to facilitate the conduct of peaceful elections.
