Closure of UNOWA

The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established in January 2002 to promote political stability in the region. Its mandate ended in January 2016, when it merged with the Office of the Special Envoy for the Sahel (OSES) to form the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

Learning Kits - UNSC Resolutions 1325 and 1820


Resolutions 1325 and 1820 from which these learning kits are drawn, call for collective responsibility to ensure respect of citizens’ rights and to promote collaboration between men and women in the fight against
impunity for gender based violence.

The R.1325 was adopted by the UN Security Council at its 4213th meeting, on 31 October 2000. It focuses on women’s participation on in conflict prevention on and management.
The R.1820 was adopted by the Security Council at its 5916th meeting on 19 June 2008 which specifically addresses the protection on of women and girls as a weapon of war.
